A floor can pass a quick visual check and still leave you with bounce, misaligned bearing or service holes that invalidate the member layout. ## The systems and conditions that change the work

### Sawn-lumber joists
Sawn-lumber joists use OBC span tables selected by species, grade, depth, spacing, support condition and loading, which means your engineer may need to settle the load path before material is ordered.

### I-joists
I-joists are lightweight pre-engineered members whose span, bearing, blocking and hole zones come from the approved product design rather than the dimensional-lumber tables, which means your quote carries the matching member layout, connector schedule and site handling.

### Metal-web wood joists
Metal-web wood joists are also recognized lightweight systems and can create different service-routing opportunities, but their capacity and installation remain product-specific, which means you get the route supported by the drawings instead of a choice made from habit.

### Built-up wood beams
Built-up wood beams use the OBC prescriptive details only within the beam span-table conditions, which means your following trades inherit that system's spacing, openings and limits.

## What belongs in the scope
Part 9's prescriptive floor provisions apply only within the spacing, span and loading conditions in 9.23.1.1; systems outside them require Part 4 design, so the floor-joist-systems boundary is fixed before award. Ontario recognizes dimensional lumber, I-joists and metal-web wood joists as distinct floor-system categories, which means your quote can name exclusions and owner-supplied items instead of hiding them.
Floor area and joist spacing change member and subfloor quantities, so measured floor-joist-systems quantities control the takeoff. ## The mistake we want found before the work begins
A bearing wall running parallel to joists can sit between them and load nothing designed to carry it. Once the subfloor is down, the wall line looks solid while the support gap is hidden below. We align that wall over joists, blocking, a beam or an engineered transfer before the deck is fastened.

## Member and fastening decisions that affect the result
Structural lumber for joists and beams must carry an accepted grade mark, which means your installed member must match the grade or product shown in the design. Installed framing lumber must contain no more than 19 percent moisture, which means you can verify the material condition before it is enclosed.
Floor joist end bearing is at least 38 mm unless ribbon-board support is used, which means your bearing and connection detail must preserve that capacity. Beam ends require at least 89 mm of even, level bearing unless an applicable span-table note permits otherwise, which means you can trace the fastening requirement to the actual assembly.

## The hold point and the trades waiting after it
Ontario's Part 9 framing notice occurs when structural framing and HVAC ductwork and piping are substantially complete, which means your sequence must reach that visible hold point before finishes. Ontario prescribes an inspection response within 2 days after notice, excluding weekends, holidays and office closures, which means you can plan the following trade around the stated response.
Mississauga requires plumbing, electrical and HVAC rough-ins to pass before framing inspection and keeps framing uncovered, which means your mechanical and electrical work may have to be complete before the framing review. Wall crews inherit the joist elevations and bearing support, while mechanical trades inherit only the approved penetration zones, which means you avoid reopening work the municipality needed to see.
