## What can put your restaurant framing at risk
A restaurant schedule falls apart when kitchen walls are framed before equipment, hood and service routes agree. The room can look ready while one grease duct or heavy feature has nowhere approved to go. ## The kitchen and dining conditions that change the work

### A full commercial kitchen, warming kitchen, takeout counter or beverage-only service
Each of these carries different exhaust, plumbing and wall requirements, so the wall package for a hood-heavy line kitchen is not the package we frame for a coffee counter with no cooking exhaust at all. Get that wrong at layout and your mechanical contractor is chasing wall-depth changes after the studs are already covered.

### A restaurant inside a mixed-use building
Sitting inside a mixed-use building can require separation from the residential or other occupancies above or beside it under OBC 3.1.3 and 3.2.2.6, so your framing package has to carry that separation, not just a partition wall, and that decision belongs on the drawings before we cut a single plate.

### Walk-in coolers, hoods and rooftop equipment
These can call for independent support or reinforced openings rather than ordinary partition framing, so your quote should name which openings get that treatment. We frame to the approved structural support for that equipment, never to a guess made on site.

### Curved banquettes, bars, feature ceilings and open kitchens
These add architectural geometry on top of the same life-safety requirements, they do not replace them, so a striking feature ceiling still has to clear the same fire separations and egress routes as a plain one.

## What belongs in the scope
Occupancy classification and occupant load get established from your actual dining, kitchen, takeout, retail and accessory uses under OBC 3.1.2 and 3.1.17, never from the business name on the lease, so your scope starts from the use that is actually going in. Toronto includes qualifying small restaurant interior alterations in its express-permit path, but that is not a blanket exemption from permit or Code review, so we still confirm what your specific alteration needs before framing starts.
Wall length, ceiling changes, service openings and washroom count set the framing quantity on your takeoff. Hood, duct, walk-in cooler and equipment supports add structural and service coordination on top of that, and rated separations and shaft construction add extra layers and hold points wherever your plans call for them. Dense plumbing and mechanical routing pushes more bulkheads and framing adjustments into the ceiling, and if you are building beside occupied neighbours, restricted delivery windows become a phasing constraint we plan around, not an afterthought.

## How a restaurant package moves from drawings to handoff
- Confirm. Confirm your proposed use, seat count, occupant load, exits, kitchen type and existing building conditions, so the framing package starts from a use that has actually been established, not assumed.
- Overlay. Overlay your equipment, hood, exhaust, make-up air, sprinkler, plumbing, electrical and reflected-ceiling drawings, so a dimensional conflict turns up on paper instead of on site.
- Identify. Identify fire separations, service shafts, grease-duct routes and protected penetrations before layout, so your rated boundaries are marked before anyone reaches for a stud gun.
- Lay out. Lay out your dining, washroom and service routes to preserve egress and barrier-free clearances, so the finished walk width still matches what the drawings promised.
- Frame. Frame walls, equipment openings, bulkheads and backing to the approved architectural and kitchen-vendor dimensions, so your equipment installer gets an opening that actually fits the unit being delivered.
- Coordinate and hold. Coordinate noncombustible clearances and supports at your cooking and exhaust equipment before closure, then keep every rated assembly and above-ceiling service interface visible until it has been inspected, so nothing gets covered before it has been seen.

## The mistake we want found before the work begins
An exhaust hood cannot be hung from ordinary partition framing because the studs were never designed for that reaction. Discover it after the ceiling and services are underway and the structural support has to be inserted through finished coordination. We establish the approved hood support before surrounding walls close.

## Member and fastening decisions that affect the result
Part 9's steel-stud provisions apply only to non-loadbearing walls under OBC 9.24.1.1, so a wall carrying real load moves onto its own design path, not a thicker stud. Interior non-loadbearing steel studs need at least 0.46 mm base-steel thickness under OBC 9.24.2.2, and the runners have to be at least as thick as the studs with flanges at least 30 mm deep under OBC 9.24.2.3, so your wall actually holds up under daily kitchen and dining traffic. Any opening wider than one stud space gets double studs at each jamb under OBC 9.24.2.4, and board fasteners have to penetrate at least 10 mm through the steel framing under OBC 9.24.3.5, so your finish trades find solid backing instead of a stud that spins under the screw.

## The hold point and the trades waiting after it
Toronto's alteration plans ask for your existing and proposed uses, plumbing fixtures, reflected ceilings, wall assemblies, fire separations and framing above, so that is the package we build toward. You, as the permit holder, are responsible for requesting the required inspections, so we keep rated assemblies and above-ceiling service interfaces visible until that inspection happens.
Your kitchen-equipment and ventilation trades inherit the framed openings, clearances and support points we leave behind, and your plumbing trade inherits the wall depths, fixture centres and service routes we frame around. ## Framing restaurants across the GTA
Ontario sets the Code requirements your restaurant has to meet, occupancy classification, egress, fire separations and equipment support, and your municipality administers the permit and inspection for that address. Toronto includes qualifying small restaurant interior alterations in its express-permit scope, but a change of use into restaurant occupancy still needs the applicable Part 10 or Part 11 Code analysis, so an express path is not a shortcut around that review. Your site decides the rest: an occupied plaza with restricted delivery windows frames differently than a standalone building with clear access.
