## The systems and conditions that change the work

### Sawn-lumber joists and rafters
Sawn-lumber joists and rafters use the Part 9 span tables only after species, grade, depth, spacing, loading and support condition are identified, which means your engineer may need to settle the load path before material is ordered.

## What belongs in the scope
Section 9.23's prescriptive route covers repetitive lumber or engineered members no more than 600 mm on centre, spans no more than 12.20 m and floor live loads no more than 2.4 kPa; work outside those conditions requires Part 4 design, so the rough boundary is fixed before award. Rough framing is not complete for inspection merely because walls stand: structural framing, HVAC rough-ins and required fire blocking must reach the municipality's stated hold point, which means your quote can name exclusions and owner-supplied items instead of hiding them.
Framed floor, wall and roof area changes the number of OBC-governed members, panels and connections installed, so measured rough quantities control the takeoff. Species, grade, depth, spacing and loading change the allowable member schedules, which means you can compare the selected member schedule rather than a generic allowance. Engineered-member share changes layouts, connectors and product-specific restrictions, so rough coordination is visible before approval.

## How the work moves from drawings to handoff
- Review. Review the issued architectural, structural and product layouts and identify bearing lines, openings, concentrated loads and revision status, so you get a buildable set with bearing lines and open questions marked.
- Verify. Check foundation dimensions, elevations, anchors and sill requirements before setting floor supports, so you catch a dimensional conflict before it becomes a site delay.
- Set. Install posts, built-up or engineered beams and floor joists with their specified bearing, restraint and connectors, so your loads land on the supporting structure in the designed order.
- Frame. Apply subfloor at right angles to joists with staggered joints, the scheduled thickness and required fastening, so your next layout starts from a stable control line.
- Coordinate. Lay out and erect loadbearing and non-loadbearing walls, openings and stud posts while preserving the support path below, so you can correct openings, blocking and service zones while access is clear.
- Release. Set roof trusses or frame rafters to the approved layout, install bracing and apply roof and wall sheathing, so you get visible, documented work ready for inspection and handoff.

## The mistake we want found before the work begins
The first floor deck can be square to itself and still be wrong to the foundation. Copy that offset upward and the roof, openings and cladding inherit it on every level. We check the foundation and bearing controls before the first deck becomes the reference for the rest of the build.

## Member and fastening decisions that affect the result
Loadbearing studs require Stud, Standard or No. 2 grade; non-loadbearing studs may use Stud, Utility or No. 3, which means your installed member must match the grade or product shown in the design. Installed framing lumber may contain no more than 19 percent moisture, which means you can verify the material condition before it is enclosed.
Floor joists require at least 38 mm of end bearing unless supported on ribbon boards, which means your bearing and connection detail must preserve that capacity. Beam ends require at least 89 mm of even, level bearing unless a span-table note permits otherwise, which means you can trace the fastening requirement to the actual assembly.

## The hold point and the trades waiting after it
Ontario requires notice when Part 9 structural framing and heating and air-conditioning ductwork and piping are substantially complete, which means your sequence must reach that visible hold point before finishes. The prescribed inspection response is 2 days after notice, excluding weekends, holidays and closed-office days, which means you can plan the following trade around the stated response.
Mississauga requires plumbing, electrical and HVAC rough-ins to pass before the framing inspection is booked, which means your mechanical and electrical work may have to be complete before the framing review. Mississauga checks structure and openings against the drawings, fire blocking, ceiling heights, rooms and windows while framing is uncovered, which means you avoid reopening work the municipality needed to see.

## Planning the work across the GTA
Ontario sets the building rules while the municipality administers the permit and inspection for the address, which means your approved set must settle sawn-lumber joists and rafters before work is covered.
