Where wood framing wins
Dimensional lumber and engineered wood (LVL, LSL, I-joists) are the default for houses for good reasons: lower material cost, fast to work, strong in the loads a home sees, and every trade knows it. Where metal stud framing wins
Metal stud framing, light-gauge steel studs and track, is the better choice when you need:
- Non-combustible assemblies. Commercial fit-outs and fire-rated demising walls in multiplex and commercial buildings often require non-combustible framing.
- Dimensional stability. Steel does not shrink, warp, or twist, which matters for tall walls and long, straight runs.
- Moisture and pests. Steel does not rot or feed termites, useful in specific below-grade or exposed conditions.
The honest trade-offs
Steel costs more in material and needs different fasteners and tools. It conducts heat, so exterior steel walls need thermal breaks. Wood is cheaper and faster for typical residential structure. Many projects use both, wood for the structure, steel for fire-rated or non-load-bearing partitions.
